Samatha meditation is one of the simplest and most beginner-friendly meditation techniques of all types. Samatha meditation is also known as concentration meditation. In other words, it is meditation that concentrates consciousness on one point of interest. Focus on the flame and meditate. Abdominal breathing. Either inhale through your nose and exhale through your nose, or exhale through your mouth. Do this with your eyes half closed or with your eyes closed. You can focus by counting your breaths, or you can focus on the movement of your belly for abdominal breathing. There is no set time limit, so it can be done in a short amount of time.
A classic Chinese treatment is the fire massage. In Tibet, something similar is known as "fire dragon therapy." It is sometimes translated as "fire massage", "steam massage", "fire", "fuo", "huǒliáo", and "fire therapy". Cover the body of the client lying down with plastic wrap and a thick towel, and put another towel on top of it. The towel is soaked in alcohol and set on fire. Apply to cold areas such as the back, legs, knees, stomach, and neck. Let the flame burn for about 1 minute. When extinguishing, cover the fire with a separately prepared wet towel. First, warm the affected area and then massage it with your hands. It's like being wrapped in a giant electric blanket. Another variation is to warm an alcohol-soaked swab by rubbing it against the body. To be precise, rather than warming with the heat of the fire, it has a strong spiritual connotation of exorcising evil spirits from the body with the fire itself. It's a pretty wild method, but it's effective for everything from joint pain to digestive problems and insomnia. The flame is hot, so it is not a common treatment method even in China. |
